Memoirs of a student - Last days at IIITM

My five years at IIITM, it felt like a lifetime, and passed too quickly.

I was one of the few residents who stayed at the hostel even during holidays and breaks. And wherever I went; a holiday, an internship, a field study; no matter how hard things were, I was always with the insurance that no matter what, I always have IIITM to go back to. It was a haven, a sanctuary.

It was frightening how events began to break loose at an alarming rate when those final days approached: exams, projects, cases, presentation, farewells, placements, celebrations, and the biggest of them all, the thesis! All of us running hither and thither, giving a last touch to everything.

Dear reader, may you never feel what I once felt during those last days of parting at the end of my five year integrated post gruaduate course. It was the culmination of a lifetime of fun, friendship and learning. And to realise that it was to end so soon, I wanted nothing more then to leave the place, not take a second glance back, and never to think of it again; not because I was happy to go away, but because, to have a glance back would have broken my spirit and dissolved me into tears.

I miss the security, the fun, the friends and the learnings, all of which I had taken them for granted to be a part of my life, and I well know how it feels to have suddenly taken those away and see them deserting me. Till this day, I remember what it felt like to be a IIITMian. I remember.

ACM-ICPC comes to ABV-IIITM, Gwalior

And it arrives, in about time.

ACM, The Association for Computing Machinery, is the world's largest educational and scientific computing society, delivers resources that advance computing as a science and a profession.

The ACM-ICPC, is the Inter-collegiate Programming contest, which is held annually, for teams of 3 university/college students involving algorithmic programming problems. The contest is considered to be the "Olympics of Computer Programming".The Regional Finals would be held on the 3rd and 4th October, 2009. Each Regional finals selects one team as winner of the site and will be eligible to participate in the world finals This year, the world finals will be held in April, 2010 at Harbin Engineering University, Harbin (China).

After the immense success in the previous year's ACM-ICPC held at the Kanpur site, (team brute force from ABV-IIITM, Gwalior wins the Regional finals to land in the World Finals, held at Stockholm, Sweden) the South Asian Kanpur-Gwalior site regionals would be held at ABV-IIITM, Gwalior. IIT-Kanpur has held the regional finals for ACM-ICPC for the past 10 years, and this is the first time that ABV-IIITM, Gwalior would be holding a regional finals for ACM-ICPC. (and many more in the future, hopefully)

A few details about the Regional finals, and how they go about it. Each participating team consists of at most 3 contestants and a coach from the same institution. Generally each team gets 6 to 8 problems to be solved within 5 hours. A team can submit the programs in C, C++ or in JAVA. As my experience as a participant, the tension is immense, and there's excitement throughout the 5 hours, which reaches its peak during the final ending minutes, when last minute submissions lead to a huge change in positions on the scoreboard. ( and as engineering students, we all know how that works! )

IIITM Alumni Meet'09 at Gwalior

Dear All,
The IIITM Alumni Association has been continuing on the lines of improvement in making the Alumni of the institute closer by providing platforms for interaction one after the other. The Association feels proud to have gathered success at the latest Bangalore chapter that started on the 14th of June this year.

The Alumni of the institute are the forefathers of learning for the students. Considering the fact, the institute is organizing an Alumni Meet in the institute premises for the second consecutive year starting from the 29th to 30th August’09. This would also serve as a motivation for the students to prepare themselves to face the corporate world.

It therefore, gives us immense pleasure to invite you at the Meet so that you could go back to the past times and recollect those past memories that have given you the respectable positions you hold. The Meet would be open for all the Alumni such that they could extend their relationships with the institute. The Alumni Association would certainly add a feather to its cap of success with the proceedings of the Alumni Meet. So, let’s leave no stone unturned in helping the institute face the highly competitive world of today.

Upgradation of IIITM gwalior to IIT Gwalior...

This post was originally posted on Abhigyan Abhikaushalam Students’ Forum by the same author.

Guys !!!
there's a proposal to upgrade IIITM Gwalior to IIT gwalior ...
Bt the problem is in implementation ...
May be we can see the such upgradation in future ... :
Reference :
Gwalior’s institute may not be upgraded to IIT

But on another question on the issue of upgradation of ABV-IIITM (Atal Bihari Vajpayee Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management), Gwalior to an IIT raised by Maya Singh in Rajya Sabha, Purandeswari, in a written reply to this question said that, “Madhya Pradesh is already having various centrally funded technical educational institutions viz MANIT (Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology), Bhopal; ABV-IIITM, Gwalior; PDPM-IIITDM (Pt Dwarka Prasad Mishra Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing, Jabalpur and IIM (Indian Institute of Management) at Indore. Further, IISER (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research) has been approved in Bhopal. Planning commission has given its ‘in-principle’ approval for setting up a School of Planning and Architecture in Bhopal. At present, there is no proposal to upgrade ABV-IIITMG, Gwalior to an IIT.

for more detail you can see here ...

Some comments to this posts:

Do we really need to be converted

On April 5th, 2009 ipg_200611 says:

What I believe is that IIIT gwalior should not be converted into IIT..IIITs are having their own identity and they are specialized institute of ministry of india. If we make them IIT their identity will be dissolved just like ROORKEE..which previously has its own importance. IIIT has potential students , funds and infrastructure to make themselves upto level of IIT.. but it would surely take some time.
IITs are brand because of their Alumni.

Once I met a guy in IIM-Ahmedabad his name was "Vaibhav Bhamoria " h was ISM dhanbad passout. I just said that ISM should be converted to IIT ..he said that there is strong resistance from the Alumni as they dont want to liquefy the identity of being the best mining institute of india by making it IIT.

Government has plan to open around 15-16 IIIT's all over india in different states ..this will surely give a momentum in the enhancement of the publicity of the IITs...And IIIT gwalior is the 1st among those IIITs...

Comments are Invited this is what I feel ,, :)

Match the standards not the name:)

I strongly disagree with the fact of converting the IIIT into an IIT coz what i persinally feel is that the name doesn't matter, we rather need to match the standards. Alumni will always prove to be the magic. Also including Computer Science and Electronic engg will help us make a strong alumni. Better faculty is a need.
